Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After... →
I thought 2007 would end on a high note but not after reading this. In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer. According to the RIAA I am a...

How to annoy your readers →
One great way to annoy readers coming to your site is to tell them about great online content but then provide no link back to that content.  Annoy them by forcing them to copy and paste links back into the browser. Via Body Shape* www.femalebodybuilders.org has a monthly contest where visitors to the site can vote for the woman they feel has the best muscle tone. There are hundreds of gallery...

Mozilla Labs Weaves the web →
As the Web continues to evolve and more of our lives move online, we believe that Web browsers like Firefox can and should do more to broker rich experiences while increasing user control over their data and personal information. Looks like the Mozilla foundation is getting into the services business. Mozilla’s Weave project appears to duplicate the functionality of the Google’s Browser...

Using OpenID →
I came upon this blog entry while using the following search term in Google: “safari openid”.  I have been using Verign’s SeatBelt extension for Firefox to enable OpenID credential entry for some of the OpenID enable web sites I use and I agree with the author: most people will use a hosted OpenID solution and people do not want to type URLs, we can just abstract away the URLs completely   ...

Wireless Interference and Powerline →
How do you tell if other wireless networks are interfering with yours? The clearest signs are stutters and drops: file transfers or streaming downloads halt and restart, or your network connection periodically drops out altogether. My wireless G network has become less useful now that almost everyone in my neighborhood is using wireless as well. iStumbler shows over 15 wireless networks (...

Theocacao: A Look at the Acorn Image Editor →
Review of the Acorn image editor. Acorn is first working example of what I would consider a programmer’s image editor. It has a very “objecty” feel to it — sort of what might happen if Interface Builder was reincarnated as a bitmap tool. If you feel more at home in an IDE than Photoshop, I think you will probably like Acorn (Via Theocacao: A Look at the Acorn Image Editor.)

Nokia says no to Ogg →
Picked up a story over on the Linux and Open Source blog about Nokia petition to have the Ogg format removed from a W3C standard.  Seems Nokia does not like the idea of free and open standards and might be afraid of the impact to their business model.  Sad to read such news. Looks like Nokia has growth issues and problems with a management - while right hand goes to the open world, left hand...

Commitment is Like Watching Grass Grow →
A few months ago I started taking a leadership course. Inside that course I took on a project, “You’re Not Alone!” to build an online community for people with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is characterized by muscle, joint, or bone pain, fatigue, and a wide range of other symptoms. My wife has suffered from it for a few years. I have watched her struggle; unable to help her other than saying a...

Jing is one of my favourite things. →
Maybe because this is one of my favourite childhood songs or maybe just because… but I really like this. We do know that if you want to meet the Jing team in a new light, check out the music video. Oh–and we apologize if this song gets stuck in your head and friends and colleagues start giving you strange looks…  (Via Start the Singing! Jing 1.4 is Out the Door! (Jing Blog).)

Glassboth tells me Ron Paul is my guy. →
originally uploaded by Khürt. I was shocked by the 80% match with Ron Paul until I read the short bio. So folks, forget about the debates etc. Just take the Glassboth quiz and let them choose.

Apple’s secret, which is no secret to Mac users, is that major OS X releases deliver tangible value far in excess of their asking price, which in Leopard’s case is $129. OS X is, first and foremost, a platform for integrated, user-facing applications. And to a far greater extent than previous releases, OS X Leopard itself exploits the facilities that Apple’s developers have used to create the...

Finding where you are…. →
The geekier amongst us and those familiar with Unix should really like this trick. You can have Mac OS X 10.5 display the full directory path in the Finder window title bar by issuing a simple command from the Terminal. (Via Show full directory path in Finder window title bars - OS X Daily.)
